INFORMATION ABOUT THE APPLES IN OUR NURSERY
We have been
growing apples for 28 years near Medina,
Texas in an area where apples had not been
grown before. We have tried many
varieties of apples to try to find which
kinds are most suitable for our locality.
Over the years we have selected 13 of the
most satisfactory ones. these
varieties we now grow in our orchards and
sell for our plant nursery. We graft
most of our own trees and usually have 1000
to 1500 apple trees on hand. All of
the trees are dwarf or semi-dwarf and will
produce fruit within a year of the time of
purchase. All plants are in 5-gallon
buckets and can be planted any time of the
year. We also have lots of car and
maintenance information to help you learn
how to grow apples at home.
The kinds of
apples that we are currently growing and
selling are listed below:
Dorset Golden
Ripe in June. This apple if from the
Bahamas and may be grown deep into south
Texas. The Hill Country is too far
north for it. Its color is yellow with
a reddish blush and its flavor is mild.
It is a pollinator apple for Anna and the
two are usually planted together. It
is hardy and very productive.
Anna
Ripe in June.
Anna comes from Israel and is best suited
for the southerly parts of Texas. It is
usually planted with Dorsett Golden. It is
red with a yellow blush and quite a good
eating apple. Just before it ripens it
is tart and crisp and is excellent for pies.
It is hardy and productive.
Gala
Ripe in
mid-July. Gala is one of the top apples
worldwide and has a great following in the U.S.
It is red-orange in color with reddish striping
and tends to be small in size. It is very sweet
and crisp and stores pretty well for an early
season apple. This apple is good for whatever
you want it to do.
Mollies
Delicious
Ripe in late
July. Mollies are a large, red and yellow apple
with great flavor. It is not a commercial
variety because it bruises easily, but its
popularity comes from its outstanding taste and
looks. Excellent pie quality just before it
ripens.
Jonathan
Ripe in August. Jonathan is very tart and is a
gourmet pie apple. It has almost a cult
following of apple lovers who don't think there
are any apples except this one and simply won't
eat apples until the Jonathans are ripe. Good
red color.
Goldina
Ripe in August. This apple has produced
amazingly well in our orchards for years and has
won our admiration. It is large, purple-red and
yellow, and has very good flavor. It is a cross
between Golden Delicious and an Australian apple
called Adina.
Crispin
Ripe in
mid-August. It is very large and yellow-green
in color. It has been ranked in the ten best
apples in the world for flavor. The tree is
vigorous and with strong wood that can hold
large crops of fruit. It is popular in the
northeastern United States where it is a
commercial variety.
Jonagold
Ripe in August.
Jonagold has a big, robust flavor because it is
a cross between the very tart Jonathan and the
very sweet Golden delicious and it gets the best
of both parents in flavor. This is a great
apple for pies or for eating out of hand. Its
color is light green in our warm climate.
Early Fuji
(September Wonder)
Ripe in mid to
late August. It is a true Fuji with all the
outstanding attributes of the original Fuji, but
ripens much earlier and has better looks.
Red
Delicious (Adams Apple)
Ripe in August.
This is a strain of the old standby Red
Delicious that has excellent red color even when
grown in our warm climate. It has the same
flavor, but much better red color.
Red Fuji
Ripe in late
September. This is the original Fuji apple in
the United States that took the market by
storm. It is not really red; in fact it has
been called “memorably ugly”. Its unbelievably
sweet flavor and crisp texture is so outstanding
that its lack of beauty is quickly forgiven.
Granny Smith
Ripe in October. This outstanding green apple
from Australia has been a favorite for years. It
is very tart and crisp and never mushy and is an
outstanding cooking apple. The longer it
hangs on the tree the sweeter it gets.
With the long growing season that we have in
Texas, we can grow the best Grannies of anywhere
in the U. S.
Pink Lady
Ripe in early November, the latest apple of all.
Pink lady is new in the U.S. and some say it is
the best apple of all. As the name implies, it
is indeed pin in color. It is sweet and tart,
very crisp, excellent for eating out of hand or
for cooking, It is as sweet as Fuji and as
tart as Granny Smith and will last for months in
the refrigerator.
